Are tax ID and EIN the same?
I often see tax ID vs EIN mentioned together. Can someone explain the difference and which identification number a U.S. business typically needs?

Tax ID is a general term for the numbers that identify individuals or organizations for tax purposes, such as Social Security Numbers, ITINs, and EINs. EIN refers to a specific type of tax ID number that is used for businesses.

A tax ID is a general term that refers to an identification number assigned for tax purposes, and EIN stands for Employer Identification Number, which is one of the types of tax ID assigned by the IRS. It means that all EINs are tax IDs, but not all tax IDs are EINs.
