I may not be able to complete my return before the deadline. Can someone explain how to file a tax extension and whether it also extends the time to pay taxes owed?

To file a U.S. federal tax extension, submit IRS Form 4868 electronically or by mail by the original filing deadline. You generally get six additional months, but taxes owed are still due by the original deadline.
