Is a tax ID the same as an Employer Identification Number?
Is a tax ID the same as an Employer Identification Number? I often see these terms used interchangeably, but are they actually the same thing in every situation? What should business owners know when applying for or using an EIN?

Not always. A Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a broader category of identification numbers used for tax purposes. An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is one specific type of TIN issued by the IRS, mainly for businesses and employers.

Yes, but there’s a small distinction. Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a specific type of Tax ID (TIN) issued by the IRS to businesses and certain other entities. So, an EIN is a tax ID, but not every tax ID is an EIN.

Yes, but not always. In the U.S., a Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a broad term for identification numbers used for tax purposes. An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is one type of TIN specifically assigned to businesses and employers by the IRS. Individuals may have other types of TINs.
