What does effective date mean for taxes?
I’ve seen the term effective date used in tax rules, forms, and financial documents. How is an effective date determined, and why is it important when understanding a U.S. tax or accounting requirement?

An effective date for taxes is the date when a tax rule, rate, deduction, or change officially starts applying. For example, if a new tax rate has an effective date of January 1, it generally applies to income or transactions covered by the rule from that date onward.

Effective dates for taxes represent those dates on which tax laws, rates, deductions, or other changes become effective. For instance, where a tax law or rate becomes effective from January 1, it applies to the income or activities that fall under that tax law after January 1.
