What does expat mean?
What does expat mean, and how is the term generally used for people living outside their home country? I’d like to understand the meaning and common context of the word.

An expat (short for “expatriate”) is a person who lives in a country different from their home country, usually for work, study, retirement, or other personal reasons. For example, an Indian citizen living and working in Canada may be described as an expat in Canada.

Expat simply refers to someone living outside their native country, usually for work. In our field, it often implies a higher-earning professional role involving international tax complexities and benefits. It’s distinct from a migrant or refugee, as it’s typically a temporary, voluntary assignment. The term carries specific connotations regarding compensation packages, visa status, and the expectation of returning home after a set period, which impacts how we structure their financial planning and tax residency.
