What does IRS mean?
What does IRS mean in the U.S. tax system? I often see the abbreviation on tax forms and notices, so I’d like to understand what the agency does and why taxpayers interact with it.

It's short for Internal Revenue Service, basically the US tax people we all love to hate.

IRS = Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. federal agency responsible for collecting taxes and enforcing the Internal Revenue Code. It operates under the Department of the Treasury.

Why you deal with it: the IRS processes your tax returns, issues refunds, collects unpaid taxes, sends notices for errors or audits, and enforces compliance (penalties, liens, etc.). It also issues guidance on tax law, manages programs like the EITC, and runs audits to verify accuracy.

Basically, any time money changes hands with the federal government over income, payroll, or business taxes, the IRS is the agency on the other end.
